VASTU SHASTRA
Vastu Shastra is a traditional Indian architectural system, thousands of years old, that studies how the orientation, layout, and proportion of a space affect the people living in it. Much like Feng Shui in Chinese tradition, it treats a building not as a neutral container, but as something that actively shapes daily life: sleep, focus, relationships, energy.
At its core, Vastu looks at simple, observable things: which direction a room faces, where the sun enters and when, how air and movement flow through a space, and where key functions - sleeping, cooking, working, resting - sit relative to each other and to the cardinal directions.
Why it still matters in modern design
Vastu begins with stillness and actually noticing what's already there. A home, a room, a plot of land: before any design decision, there's the practice of simply seeing it clearly. Clearing away what's unnecessary, physically and otherwise. Clean surroundings, clear mind, calmer life
Vastu originated both as a practical and a metaphysical practice, the two are never really separate. It developed at a time when people were more attuned to things that are harder to name today - the way a place feels before it's explained, the subtle effect of light, direction, and orientation on a body and a household.
A kitchen oriented as the ‘engine’ of the home, a bedroom that is grounded and a quiet anchor for the family. An entrance oriented to let the day in. A central living area as a room to breathe. These design foundations hold up really well in contemporary architecture.
